The prenatal checklist, according to health experts.

Prenatal vitamin options are plentiful, and it can be confusing to know where to start and stop. With a healthy pregnancy top of mind, we asked fertility health specialists to break down what they'd be looking for in a prenatal vitamin. And we've shared their recommendations when it comes to supporting a healthy pregnancy.

BE SURE TO INCLUDE:

1. ACTIVATED FOLATE

Also known as calcium folinate on your vitamin label, is the top quality supplemental form of folate, and for good reason. They’re the closest thing we have to folate found in our food, providing the easiest pathway to absorption in the body, and the fastest way to raise maternal folate levels, which is important to prevent the development of hyperhomocysteinemia- a condition which can influence developmental abnormalities.

2. CHOLINE

Essential for embryonic brain development, liver and placental function, Choline is also now recognised as important for the development of the neural tube. Supplementation is important as approximately 90%–95% of pregnant women consume less choline than recommended.

3. VITAMIN D

Important for foetal bone development, and maternal health, adequate levels are an important factor in establishing a pregnancy. Look for a vitamin high in Vitamin D (100IU). You'll see some supplements tick this one off the list by including much less- but it's worth noting anything less and you'd  probably get more Vitamin D walking from your home to your car.

4. IODINE

Essential for foetal growth and development, iodine is required at an increased amount of more than 45% in pregnancy. Look for around 270mcg in your prenatal vitamins.

5. B COMPLEX

Adequate B vitamin levels are needed to support foetal brain development, prevent congenital heart defects and treat molecular deficiencies which can cause miscarriages and birth defects. From a maternal health perspective, this group of B vitamins provides a natural energy lift, eases discomforts associated with leg cramps, moderates mood and alleviates symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
