Should you take iron in pregnancy?

The short answer: probably not by default. Here's why moode leaves it out. On purpose.

WHY MOODE LEFT IT OUT

LET'S TALK ABOUT IRON

(01) The default

Why is iron in nearly every prenatal?

Because it's been the default for decades. Not because it's always needed at every moment of pregnancy. Prenatals were built on the assumption that iron should be included as standard.

But the science on routine iron supplementation has moved. What was standard 20 years ago is now a considered, case-by-case decision.

(02) The guidance

Routine iron isn't actually recommended.

Routine iron supplementation isn't universally recommended for all pregnant women. In line with Australian health guidelines, the RACGP advises targeted iron supplementation only when clinical deficiency is confirmed through testing.

Health practitioners will recommend testing, not routine supplementation. Because you'll want your iron supported at the right time.

A note from us. Iron needs are individual. If you've been told you're deficient or your practitioner recommends iron for you specifically, follow their advice. This page is about the routine, one-size-fits-all approach, not personalised care.

(03) The problem

Iron is a common cause of GI discomfort.

Iron in a supplement is one of the most common causes of nausea, constipation, and general gut upset. When your body doesn't need extra iron, taking it anyway can be a lot to tolerate.

Especially in early pregnancy, when your gut is already dealing with enough.

"My prenatal makes me sick" is one of the most common things women say in the first trimester. It shouldn't have to be part of the deal.

(04) Our position

Iron-free by design. Not by accident.

When Jess formulated moode, she left iron out. On purpose. Not because iron is bad. Because it doesn't belong in a daily prenatal for every woman.

What's in moode instead: activated folate. Thoughtfully dosed choline. Iodine. Vitamin D. B vitamins in their bioavailable forms. A nutritional roundup of what's needed to support maternal health and healthy foetal development.

If you're deficient in iron, take it separately at the right dose, on your practitioner's advice. That's the smarter play.

What the mums are saying

Gentle enough to actually take.

  • ★★★★★
"Such great vitamins. I've had hyperemesis this pregnancy and I've actually been able to keep them down."

  • ★★★★★
"I was taking another brand 3 months prior to conception and throughout my first trimester, but it repeated on me something shocking. I bought myself some moode after a rec from a pregnant friend. This doesn't repeat on me at all and the capsules are so much smaller than other brands. I love that they are Aussie owned and female led."
